Wisconsin DNR Trout Streams Booklet
May 9th, 2023 at 11:34am

I contacted the DNR about a broken link to their Trout Stream Booket.

The reposted the booklet here. It has all the trout streams listed by county.

They used to have the booklets at the DNR offices.

Nobody uses booklets anymore...Well except maybe Gerard...He's still kinda old school.

All the rage these days is Trout Routes...which I don't have because I refuse to pay a subscription for something that the DNR already puts out for free.

With that said...I have that booklet in both paper copy and PDF on my tablet.  Neither of which I have looked at in years though.   If I decide I'm going to explore a new stream I use this...

I do pay for TroutRoutes, but then I usually fish in at least 6 States every year.
On a side note the Wisconsin Tenkara Campout will be June 1-4 at Esofea Campground in Vernon County. There will be campers there from May 30 - June 5.

I love how you make absolute statements..."Nobody uses booklets anymore...".  How one person could be so cocksure about absolutely nothing is a complete mystery to me...   Wink

But even a broken clock is right twice a day -- I do use that publication (and have since the '70s) because it defines Class I, II, and III waters along with species reproducing and/or stocked.  The latter is admittedly dated information, but the stream classifications are not.  It's invaluable information for those who can read and understand legal government descriptions.  It's much more concise than the GIS regulations map link you posted....but whatever works for you.

Gerard, take the time to use the WDNR digital tool Jizzy linked too. It is extremely powerful and includes a lot more than you realize about specific trout streams and their specific regulations. Dump the ol' book.

The WDNR mapping tool is much better than Trout Routes in my opinion for our state and it is free.

John,

I've used that GIS mapping tool since its inception (prior to the DNR integrating it into their system, I've been using county GIS maps for landowner, MFL/FCL, and tax info since they adopted the format, mostly for grouse hunting), it's definitely useful.  However, I find that old pamphlet invaluable for different reasons....you can't have too many resources IMO.

I also use county plat books, DeLorme Gazetteer atlases, etc.  I love maps and I'm not afraid to use a compass.  Wink

Silver Creek:  Thank you for getting that back online.

What I enjoy are some of the old forest maps that show the old trails that are still there but not on the newer maps.

I also really like Onx ( Cheesy ) and Google Earth at times. A compass is a must for me when grouse hunting.

Well I kind of know how you are old school...so that's why I made the statement.  Wink    You probably still use a flip phone or did you finally cross over to the dark side??.   Cheesy  Tongue

But, I'm betting I'm 90%+ correct with that statement based on experience in the field running into other fisherman and hunters I speak with on my adventures.  Seems nobody uses paper books/maps for anything anymore.   Myself included.   I have the good ol' WI Atlas and Gazateer stuffed in the seat pocket of my truck, but it's been years since I looked at it.   Used to use it all the time.

Class 1, 2 and 3 are found here.  I have them downloaded to my tablet for each county.

Check out BackCountry Navigator.  No subscription fees like Onyx and plus you can add Wisconsin Landowner Parcels and BLM maps as an overlay and there are many types of maps to choose from including old topo and forest maps that show old trails that are hidden under a few trees or not on some newer maps.

Yep, I've been using that too the past several years.  As I said, there's no such thing as too much information.

You make a good point.   "Nobody" wasn't meant to meant to be taken literally.  I figured that was implied... Unless your a lawyer that is a stickler that words have meaning.   Wink  Grin

So...I will change from saying "nobody" to "most people".

The world has made a big move away from paper products the last 10-15 years.  Nostalgia’s not what it used to be and paper just can't compete with digital data...Well...unless it's used in the bathroom.  Grin

Any processes or tasks which are still reliant on paper are living on borrowed time...Thus this is why the DNR no longer publishes the booklet being discussed in this thread.
