Too Many Deer?
Oct 28th, 2019 at 7:38am

"The big buck fetish is yet another cultural factor. Deer populations in Wisconsin rebounded in part due to regulations and hunter reluctance to shoot antlerless deer. Past efforts to control the size of the deer herd played out through strategies like “Earn a Buck,” where hunters had to first shoot a doe for the privilege of shooting a buck. Earn a Buck, which was eliminated by the Legislature during the Scott Walker administration as a bone to hunters, was perhaps the most effective tool for managing the size of the state’s deer herd.

“Hunters have an opportunity to kill one to three antlerless deer in some counties, but I think we’re at a saturation point for the number of deer [that] hunters want to take,” says Wallenfang."

Absolutely agree! You can't grow vegetables now without an eight foot fence, you can't grow flowers in the yard, you can't grow pine trees, and you can't drive anywhere without being on high alert for one of them to come bolting out of the ditch. The whole deer hunting culture is out of whack.  I'm so frustrated by the excessive deer population and the effort of sportsmens' groups to increase the habitat and herd even more.  And by the explosion in the number of people feeding deer to help them get through the winter.  And by the number of people who now sit in little shacks in front of "food plots" and salt licks (i.e.; bait) waiting for that big buck who've lost the distinction between hunting and killing.  The answer to a more satisfying deer hunting experience is not more deer.  The situation is way out of balance!  My rant.  Angry

There are a number of places around here where it's just not safe to drive within an hour or so of sunset.

Though, there are never enough deer...

Rhetorical question, right?

No.  I just laugh on the inside.

The majority of today's hunters are lazy.  Throw out apples, corn, plant food plots etc.  Then sit and wait for deer to come in but when they don't see any then they complain that there too many wolves.   Not realizing that the deer are bedded down during the day and moving at night.

Thank god WI hired deer Czar a few years back for $125,000.   His efforts must be paying off now.  Roll Eyes

Still few if any cedar regenerating up north, so yes, too many deer.  When I was a kid, no one hunted over bait.  Now people can't hunt without it, and when they aren't hunting they have to have a pile in their backyard so they can watch the deer.  In my county, baiting and feeding is outlawed because CWD is here. Despite that, every gas station has pallets of deer food.  Eventually CWD will be in every county, the herd will be smaller because of it, people will see sick deer, and they'll blame the DNR after years of ignoring the advice of the DNR.

St. Peter is at the gates of heaven admitting new arrivals.  As each soul arrives, St. Peter's assistant hands him a card with the person's IQ on it.  The first card reads "170."  St. Peter asks the person "How did you use the gifts the Lord gave you?"  The person replies "I was a surgeon.  I saved many lives. I worked in a teaching hospital and taught many other doctors."  St. Peter replies "You've used your gifts wisely.  You may enter the kingdom of heaven."  The next card reads "110."  St. Peter asks "How did you use the gifts the Lord gave you?"  The person replies "I was an accountant.  I never committed tax fraud, and I treated my clients and employees fairly."  St. Peter says "You may enter the kingdom of heaven.  The next card reads "71."  St. Peter looks at the man and says "So, did ya git cher deer?"

On another site I came across this tag line that somebody uses when they post and it brought a smile:

I'd rather hunt fish than bait deer any day.
