What's in your Landscape? Plants can alter West Nile virus risk

A very interesting article that may be of interest to Grouse Hunters as to how different plants affect the reproduction of the mosquito that carries the West Nile Virus.

As an old GROUSE HUNTER in the Driftless area I would always have success hunting grouse around or in a blackberry patch. I also remember that when you clear cut a forest area the first year in the cleared area you would encounter bull thistles. The second year in the cleared area you would encounter new patches of blackberries.

Another interesting subject in this article is how certain exotic plants help in the reproduction of the mosquito that causes West Nile virus.

Grouse Hunters please get the WISCONSIN DEPARTMENT of NATURAL RESOURCES SCIENTISTS to investigate this phenomena as this may be the ANSWER to the DECLINE of RUFFED GROUSE.

GROUSE HUNTERS CLEAR MORE AREAS IN FORESTS and PLANT MORE BLACKBERRIES and REMOVE THE EXOTIC PLANTS FROM OUR FORESTS. THANK YOU.

It's fundamental we begin to study mismanaged rivers and streams, because that's what we have.

Decline of Ruffed Grouse?

So now you have moved from willow trees to blackberries as your new panacea?

The Chapters of the Ruffed Grouse Society should have a day where they go into the forest and remove exotic plants and plant blackberries. Should we have a contest on what they should call this day?? Lips Sealed Lips Sealed

The answer that...every single time...is, "Yes."

Ma nature has lots of ways to get things to spread, and whether or not people like how things spread are not one of her criteria.

Wow, then grouse should be (but aren't) as common as sparrows in my native Pacific Northwest.  Blackberries there are generally considered a weed, until August when the berries ripen!  I know other birds love the berries, and I've found many a drunken bird near the end of the month flopping around my back yard, when the berries start to ferment.  My backyard chickens loved blackberries something fierce, and when I got on a ladder to pick some for blackberry pie, I'd toss about every third berry to them, watching a mad scramble for the berries.

I've got a raspberry patch next to my shed where I store my lawn equipment. I have trapped 6 mice in my shed this past week and I'm sure the raspberries are what has brought them to my garden and my shed.

Mother Nature has many varieties of berries that ripen in different times in the Summer. I would like to plant these different berries along both sides of a brook trout stream and see how many mice get eaten by the big brook trout (maybe a 10 pounder) as the mice swim from one berry patch to another. Roll Eyes

P.S. With all the berries the stream is probably called Bear Creek. Tongue

Oh yes, I have a picture where a bear left his claw marks on my cherry tree in my back yard this past week. Wink
