36 MILLION TREES Cut in ONE YEAR in US CITIES

April 27, 2018 is National Arbor Day so if you want good clean air to breathe plant a bunch of trees.

One of the easiest trees to plant is a willow tree by a creek. Just cut off a willow branch from a willow tree and trim off the little branches. Plant the willow branch about 6 feet back from the creek and deep enough so the end in the ground will stay moist.  Wink Wink

Willow trees suck. Quite literally.

That's what I thought, too - those and cottonwoods.  I've heard of streams in Oregon's high desert that were literally sucked dry by those, planted by well-meaning folks thinking that the shade would cool the streams.  Right idea, wrong tree.

GIMP "WILLOW TREES SUCK"

Gimp please read this article on willows and cottonwoods on research done at the University of Washington.

https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2014-11/uow-fp111714.php

THIS IS THE REASON MOTHER NATURE PLANTED COTTONWOODS AND WILLOWS ALONG OUR STREAMS, RIVERS, LAKES AND WETLANDS. Wink Wink

"We spend so much money treating cancer, I'd like us to take steps to prevent it instead." A quote from article.

Gimp, Thanks for reading. Embarrassed Embarrassed

P.S. I should probably plant a cottonwood or willow on my neighbors lawns with all the poison they had spread on their lawns, but then they couldn't take pride in poisoning children and pets.

From my brief education on the willow tree I did not find any study done on the buoyancy on water of different shaped leafs. So I am going to make an assumption the reason willow leaves are narrow and long is so they will sink faster in water. Being that the vast majority of willow trees are found near water their leaves sink to the bottom of waterways and provide instant and rich carbon to the invertebrates that inhabit our waterways. Mother Nature always amazes me.

With all that carbon the invertebrates are plentiful and the brown trout are not "STUNTED" Brown Trout but instead are called "OBESE" Brown Trout under a willow tree. Tongue Tongue

P.S. When I was a young child I will always remember a 15 inch Brown Trout that lived in a "Willow Hole" on my neighbor's farm that was the most "Obese" Brown Trout I'll ever see.

I release all my rights to the study of leaf buoyancy to any scientist who would like to do a tax payer funded study. Wink

Cool, one of those species is named after my natal stream, the Nehalem River!  Over on the Oregon coast, there is no shortage of water (my parents' place on the Nehalem near the ocean had an average of 6 FEET of rain per year), and I do know the local beaver population loves the willows.
