Interesting, in an academic sort of way.

I kinda feel like the broodstock fish ought be released in non-fishing water to live out their lives in peace.

...but that's the human in me...

Intriguing that the infamous golden stream of Vernon County got some brooders.  Wonder if it has something to do with the lack of big fish what with the gross overabundance of 8-11 inch browns in there and a catch and release only regulation throughout its entire length.  Some harvest would do that water some good.

Ironically, you will need an ice auger to stock the far northern trout ponds and good luck walking in through the knee deep snow. It's still Winter in some northern parts.

Seems like a good idea.  Like an old cow being put out to pasture.

Sadly, the Michigan state record brook trout is a released broodstock fish that someone caught.  At 9.5 lbs., that meaningless record will probably stand forever.

I was going musky fishing in Michigan during deer season a few years ago.  At the landing I saw a school of broodstock lake trout.  I got out the fly rod and caught a few.  Got old in about 20 seconds.  They were over a dip in the bottom right off the dock.  I threw rocks in the water to get them to disperse.  No luck.  Like turning cows loose and calling it a buffalo hunt.

This could be another one of those years that the walleye opener will be through the ice.

I get why it's C&R - serves as a nice comparison for the other regulations in the watershed and area. Hard to see what effect regulations have without some sort of control.

I prefer to fish the streams in that area where there is more harvest. In general, I'm seeing more decent fish in that watershed - many more outside of 8-11" than there used to be. Maybe it's harvest, maybe it's something else like the effects of floods reducing numbers a bit?

I am hearing there's 30" of ice left on the lakes around here.

Yup, the ice is still really thick!!

Great cross country skiing still in the north country.

The woods are still totally silent, like in January.

Yep, the kid is considering going skiing tomorrow afternoon.

...I see several lakes scheduled for stocking around here...can they stock through the ice, or do they have to wait?

Trout stocking in lakes and streams will likely be delayed this “Spring”. Road weight restrictions and unplowed landings cause the problems. I talked to one of the stocking truck drivers last week and he had been stuck 3 times already.

Making a hole with an auger and bucket carrying or piping them in works.

I think he's referring to one of the forks, not TC. There are no C and R regs on that fork anymore. It's all 5 bag, no min. Check the regs.

If you're only catching 8-11 inch browns there, you're doing something wrong.

Brooders are stocked on the lower end from what I hear.

From the sounds of it, those weren't really hatchery brood stock. They were wild fish collected in the stream this fall, held to collect eggs and returned to the stream. They are working on fixing the list so TC isn't on there.
