The Pebble Mine

Of all the bonehead things going on today, this one saddens and angers me the most...
http://www.cnn.com/2017/10/10/politics/bristol-bay-salmon-invs/index.html

"This is the jewel in the crown of America's fisheries resources, this salmon," Tom Quinn told CNN.  "If you don't think this is worth saving, what is?  If you don't think that (a gold and copper mine) is going to constitute a threat, what would?  To me, if you don't draw a line in the sand here, there's none to be drawn anywhere.  You're saying that no resource, no matter how valuable, is off-limits to development -- no matter how obviously deleterious."

Tom Quinn is quite possibly the world's foremost expert on salmon biology.  I know his work well, because our son, who is a salmon biologist for the State of Washington, earned his PhD in Quinn's research group at "the other UW".

AFFTA email I received..

Action Alert: Bristol Bay

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently proposed to "reverse clean water safeguards" for the Bristol Bay region, home to the world's most valuable salmon fishery.

AFFTA has been fighting for Bristol Bay conservation for more than 10 years, meeting with elected officials in Washington, D.C. and across the country to fight this battle. We're keen on helping our conservation partners in like-minded efforts. The importance of this ecosystem — not only to the people and businesses whose livelihoods depend on it — but also for the environment, the fishery and the salmon, cannot be overstated.

According to a report from CNN, "The EPA's move, if finalized, would make it more likely a large gold and copper mine could be built in the Bristol Bay watershed, the lawmakers warned.

The EPA's move would have to be finalized, and Pebble still would have to apply for and be granted permits to mine in the area before any construction could take place. Two public hearings on the EPA's proposal are scheduled to be held in Alaska this week. The public has until October 17 to comment on the EPA's proposed withdrawal of a move under the Obama administration to protect the Bristol Bay watershed from potential mining activities."

When considering an appropriate balance between conservation and economic prosperity, this is certainly one of those times when the risk is not worth the reward.
