Willow River

St. Croix

4/6/98

Weather: temp. 54 with storms approaching
Water: stained and slightly higher than normal
Hatches: ?
Time: 6:00 to 7:30

Comments: I ventured out on to the Willow again after being laid up due to high waters. I sure was excited to get to the water to find that it was only slightly high. The weather conditions were perfect due to a thunderstorm approaching from the southwest. I fished on the south fork of the Willow River (upper reaches) so I would not have to deal with high water.

On my first cast I lost a fighting Brookie that I estimated at 12 or 13 inches. I knew right there and then that this was going to be fun. Surprisingly enough I went another 45 minutes without a bite, but the next bite was a heart stopper. I caught a 20 inch Brown that took off up stream causing my reel to sing. Thank goodness I had my drag set just right. I got my first look at this football shaped Brown when it turned back down stream and jumped clear out of the water. I almost sh__ my pants right there. After what seemed an eternity, I landed the fish, took a measurement and a couple of pictures. I used a disposable camera so I hope the pictures turn out all right. I am assuming the Brown was a female because it didn't have a hooked jaw like the 26 incher I caught last year.

I would disclose todays location but I have promised the land owner not to advertise this GREAT SPOT. Hope you understant. :-)

Good Luck to you where ever you may venture. Rick
