Weather: sunny 45 degrees
Water: a little high, off color
Hatches: small black stones, midges
Time: afternoon
Comments: Fished race both up and down of first bridge today, some midges, small black stones but as usual for willow, no trout rising. Decided to spend day plumbing the depths with the #10 black wooley bugger. Fishing upstream on race landed only fish of the day, a slender and beautiful 19-20" brown. I was testing the theory of bigger = bigger, holds true for willow. I grew up on this stream fishing with spinning rods and raps, I have landed and released 15-20 fish in the 18-22" range, but never anything this large on fly rod. the way to fish the willow is simple, big flies dregded through deep riffles, behind boulders, under falls at falls pools. the big fish are still there.....
