Streamside Report

Westfork Kickapoo

Vernon

9/06/99

Weather: Always good when fishing!
Water: Normally clear
Hatches: Terrestrials / Olives
Time: All day / early evening

Comments: September is here! This is one of the best times to be on the Westfork. Terrestrial fishing at it's best. This is not an actual report, but a collection of four years of fishing the Westfork in September. I hope that this may help the new fly fishers that travel to the Southwest area of Wisconsin. Terrestrials in general work! However, many patterns work better than the average ant. Try many different kinds of beetle patterns as well as parachute hoppers on the spring creeks. Bead head droppers in general work wonders, but do not forget some of the more traditional patterns: green hares ear, muskrat nymphs and soft hackle patterns.

Once you find fish rising this time of year it will more than likely be either terrestrials or olives. Try olives in the sixteen to twenty size as well as emerger patterns such as the quigley cripple or cut back comparadun. Make quick use of the parachute olive patterns as well as the CDC imitations.

I hope that this will help you in your attempts to visit and enjoy SW Wisconsin this time of year. I hope that I will be able to make it to the Westfork this September, but the outlook is not good. I must add that should be arriving at the Westfork at a loss for a place to stay, please try Serendipity Farm. The owners are wonderful and would love for responsible and careful fly fishers to stay at their place. Best wishes, good luck and tight lines!
