Weather: Cloudy
Water Conditions: 39-41 degrees, clear, low
Hatches: None
Comments: Fished the Twin Rivers on Friday and Saturday. Caught three fish and lost two on Friday when the water temp was about 41. The temp dropped from 49 last Saturday. The level is actually quite low for this time of the year. A nice warm rain would really help.
Found the fish on gravel - what a change! I couldn't believe no one was walking in the redds like they normally do. Was difficult to spot fish with the cloudy skies, but patience and a good pair of polaroids work. Two of the fish were bright hens, one was the brightest fish I had ever caught. Looked like the bumper on a new car!
Saturday was quite a change. It started snowing during the night and when we got to the river it was nearly a blizzard - wind, cold, snow, YECH! It felt like December. River temp fell to 39 degrees, and fish got lockjaw. Still managed to spot a few fish on gravel, but they were very difficult to entice into striking. Lost one, and spooked a few more. Worked on very large, dark buck for about an hour before he finally hit a large stonefly pattern. Then he decided to run downstream at the speed of light and break me off! Oh well, that is steelheading for you.....
My brother managed to drag another hen out of a deep hole before we froze out on Saturday. I think we managed to do better than most despite the conditions.
Going back to fish again next weekend. Hope for rain and warm temps.
