Weather: sunny, breezy
Water: slighlty high, good clarity
Hatches: several mayflies and small caddis
Time: 4pm to dark

Comments: There was quite a bit of surface activity Friday evening, with a couple of different sizes of mayflies and a small caddis on the water. Not being an entomologist, the best I can describe is a dark mayfly about size 14-16, and a pale evening dun about a 12-14. The caddis were much smaller, 18-20. The fish were up on the surface for most of the night. That being said, the fishing should have been great, but I found it quite frustrating. Most of my offerings were refused, even though I threw just about everthing in my fly box at them. I did catch one brown about 16" and several smaller fish on a size 14 adams. I also connected with a few fish after switching to 7X tippet and fishing with size 20 griffiths gnat. Unfortunately this also resulted in two fish popping the light tippet as I tried to set the hook. It was a wonderful evening to be out on the river, but after fishing for the same three rising trout for over 1 1/2 hours without a take I was at the en! d of my wits. How can a fish with a brain the size of a pea make a grown man look so foolish? Who was caught who?

The night reminded me of a quote by Herbert Hoover I have on the wall of my office at work:

"Fishing is the chance to wash one's soul with pure air. It brings meekness and inspiration, reduces our egotism, soothes our troubles and shames our wickedness. It is the discipline in the equality of men -- for all men are equal before fish."
