Streamside Report

Rowan Creek

Columbia

3-16-99

Weather: Sunny, S Winds, 55F
Water: Clear-w-some snowmelt
Hatches: Chironomids
Time: 4pm-6pm

Comments: A great day to be outside, but slow fishing on the Rowan. Water clarity looked decent enough despite some snow water entering the stream from the storm drains in Poynette. Water temp. was 48F with fair numbers of chironomids buzzing over the surface in riffle areas. I fished many nice holes and runs over a two-hour period, drifting weighted nymphs as slowly as possible. I saw a total of four trout; one spooked from a deep run, two others rising occasionally to midge pupae, and one 9" brown that I caught on a #16 Olive nymph. With a warm sun on my back and birds singing I didn't care too much about the lack of action. Another season is beginning!
