Steelhead Report

Root River

March 15, 1997

Spent the weekend fishing the root. I only had a couple of hours to fish on Saturday and lost 2 fish.

Sunday was another story. What a day. Tempuratures were not for the timid. The eyes on my fly rod would freeze shut every five cast or so. I started out trying different patterns and tied on a black fly pattern I made up. The steelhead went nuts for this fly. They would attack it like brook trout. I landed three fish on this fly. One a 33" almost 15# winter hold over, a 8#, and a 6#, all bucks. Lost another and had a good number of strikes. I saw a half dozen fish caught.

Water was much clearer than the previous week. I could see fish moving quite easily
