Marathon

5/6/98

Weather: Bright sun, upper 70s
Water: clear, 58F
Hatches: grey caddis
Time: 11:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Comments: Hit the Plover River at midday following an unsuccessful first day of my turkey season. Fished the special regulations section north of CTH Z. Found numerous brookies rising to a grey caddis, about a size 16 or 18. Caught quite a few small fish, even a couple of nice (8-10) inchers. The largest fish of the day took a #16 grey caddis and then decided to try and break me off on anything he could swim around, under, etc. Had him tired out and could have netted him, but tried to do a gentle release without the net. He decided my legs looked like his last chance to break off and proceeded to pop my tippet on my wading boots. Oh well, at least I got a good look at him - better than 12" I'll claim.
