Comments: Fished the upper Plover River at the special regulations section upstream from CTH Z. When I got to the river I met two spinfishermen leaving the stretch I intended to fish. I asked how they did and they replied not well, the fish weren't interested in spinners. I asked if any fish were rising and they said "Yes, to some black gnat or something." I just smiled and quietly got into my gear.
Once on the river I found the "black gnat" to actually be a grey caddis, about size 16 or 18. The brook trout were rising quite readily to the flies as they hatched and danced on the water. I tied on my best imitation and immediately started to catch fish. This stretch of water has been improved by the DNR, with undercut banks and cribs. I caught many brookies between 6 and 11 inches right along the undercut banks and over the cribs. I lost track of the time on this beautiful day and ended up being late to a graduation party. Oh well, sometimes fishing needs to be your top priority!
