Streamside Report

Mt. Vernon

Dane

7-14-97

Weather: Partly cloudy...HOT!
Water: Clear (I've seen it clearer)
Hatches: varied
Time: 8:00am - 8:00pm

Comments: Got to the stream around 8:00 am. It's amazing how cold that water is! Water temp was about 56F at 8:30am. Also forgot how high the grass gets along (and all around) the stream...think I'll bring a machete next time!

The morning started off with a downpour and then from there on out is was mostly sunny with some clouds. Missed a few fish in the morning (haven't been out in a while) on an ant pattern. I moved on to one of my favorite spots around 1:00 just to see if anything was happening (at this point, it was extremely hot out) and to my surprise, the fish were sporadically rising. I threw at least 6-7 different flies at them and couldn't get anything. I finally tied on a Beattle and that was the ticket. I had two really solid slashing rises (read: large fish) to the Beattle and I missed them both (had one on and got a good look at him....big). I then switched to a micro nymph pheasant tail #20 and picked up a 17-18" Brown -- the biggest fish I've caught on Vernon. Great fish. I went back to dries and caught a smaller 8-9" Brown on a #18 Sulphur. Also tied on a Scud and had a nice fish on but lost him too. It was odd to me that there was so much activity in the middle of the day. Water temp at 1:00 was still around 56F.

I missed some more strikes to the Sulphur and then I moved on to some other water. Feeding activity never really seemed to pick up in the evening. Water temp had risen to right about 60F. Picked up a few smaller fish on an Adams before I left around 8:00....too tired to stay to see if the HEX are still around and the mosquittos got really bad.
