Weather: Fair and mild
Water: High and murky to clear
Hatches: Various
Time: All Day Long!
Comments: So I got to make my annual fishing excursion up north and went back to the Bois Brule after several years. The fishing was fabulous! On Monday, the water was still high and somewhat murky from that devastating storm, but the fish were rising to pretty much anything with a white hackle sizes 16 and up. Did quite well with Griffith's Gnats and tan Caddis. Also caught a very nice 18"+ swinging a black wooly bugger downstream. Tuesday, the water had dropped a little and had begun clearing, but the fishing was even better than before. Again, white hackle dries were the way to go. Caught over 50+ fish both days, with many, many fish missed. Most were in the 8-12" range, but plenty up thru 18". Both days were spent upstream from Winneboujou canoe landing thru the Wheatons.
On Wednesday, spent a few hours nymphing to absolutely no avail. Weird. The fish were rising again, but wanted to see what was deep - nothing! So on the way back downstream, I drifted a black bugger again. Action was a bit slower than with drys, but quite satisfying.
Overall, the river continues to impress. The fish are not spooky, thanks to the heavy canoe traffic and all three species are present and willing to fight. Can't wait to go up again (This year?) and see if I can land the knee-knocker that I turned before ripping off my line.
