Streamside Report

Black Earth Creek

May 25, 1997

Weather: Bad Spring Conditions
Water Conditons: Low and Clear
Hatches: Tan and Black Caddis,Red Quills and Hendricksons
Time: 10 am to 5 pm

Comments: Most of May has been tougher than usual on B.E. Creek. The stream is low and clearer than it should be for this time of year. The unusual cool weather and the lack of sun has left stream temps. colder than they should be. The fish are spookie and there has been a lack of surface activity. However, the fish are still out there in great numbers and can still be taken . We are seeing some tan caddis on the few sunny afternoons but there numbers are decreasing as this month comes to an end. There is a small cream midge hatch in the mornings and the browns can be found working the flats. As of 5/18/97 the Red Quills have started hatching and the Hendricksons are beginning to make there appearence. Black Caddis have been in the stream-side brush for about a week and fish spotted feeding in the afternoon can be taken with a pattern matching the above. If we can somehow get some sun and heat the hatching and fishing should improve. Right now I recommend scuds, Beadhead Pheasant Tail Nymphs fished underneath an indicator. Emerging olive caddis patterns just underneath the surface on sunny afternoons and carry Hendricksons and Black Caddis patterns along with Tan Caddis for the late afternoon surface feeders.
